Abstract Adsorbed oxygen has been shown to be present on the surfaces of several supported metal catalysts, even under nominally reducing conditions. Results from surface chemistry indicate how this surface oxygen can facilitate catalytic reaction steps, as promoter/intermediate, in ammonia synthesis, methanol synthesis, the water-gas shift reaction, methane-steam reforming and methanation.
