Plant-based diets are rapidly becoming one of the trendiest ways to eat because of their multiple proposed health benefits. Broadly, plant-based diets emphasise a greater intake of plant foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes, at the expense of animal foods such as meat, fish, and dairy. Although multiple dietary patterns—including the Mediterranean and planetary health diets, as well as vegetarianism and veganism—fall under the umbrella of a plant-based diet, the degree by which animal foods are eschewed varies.
