Liquid-Crystalline Character of Novel Main-Chain Oligophosphates Bearing Lipophilic and/or Mesogenic Moieties

In the present study it is investigated whether certain oligophosphates prepared by the reaction of phosphorous oxychloride with long-chain aliphatic diols and the mesogenic 4,4 diphenyldiol exhibit liquid crystalline character. Specifically, it was found that the oligophosphates resulting from aliphatic diols show liquid crystalline behavior while that originating from the diphenyldiol does not exhibit liquid crystalline character. It has however been established that mesomorphic phases are induced with oligophosphates bearing, in random, mesogenic and lipophilic groups
