The results of a study on the title subject are presented. By means of experiments it has been determined which parameters effect the efficiency of the desulfurization the most. A model has been designed by which the desulfurization efficiency can be calculated as a function of the washing tank geometry and the process parameters. Calculations were carried out for the flue gas desulfurization installation of the power plant unit Amer-8 in Geertruidenberg, Netherlands. Regarding the color of lime or limestone and the produced gypsum the effect of the different parameters is determined. Also the parameters that effect the size and the form of the gypsum crystals are determined. A model has been developed which describes the effect of different process parameters on the calcium carbonate content in the gypsum
