Soot and Soot Diagnostics by Laser‐Induced Incandescence

Abstract This chapter provides a brief overview of soot formation in combustion environments, focusing mainly on the characterization of soot. The variety of soot diagnostics covering nonintrusive as well as sampling methods is briefly described. Laser‐induced incandescence (LII) is introduced in greater detail, covering the theoretical background of mass concentration and particle size determinations. Some experimental approaches, and results achieved in fundamental laboratory experiments and in practical applications, are also outlined.
