Effects of Aerobic Exercise and Resistance Exercise for 16 Weeks on Senior Fitness Test and Self-Efficacy in Elderly Women

The purpose of this study was to find out which exercise is more effective in Senior fitness test(SFT) and Self-efficacy. Aerobic exercise and resistance exercise are aligned with the ACSM exercise guideline(low-intensity and long-term). thirty seven people of female women aged over 65 years old particiated in this study. They were divided into aerobic exercise group(AEG, n=14, 71.8±4.9 yrs), resistance exercise group(REG, n=13, 75.1±6.0 yrs) and control group(CG, n=10, 75.3±4.7 yrs) .The aerobic exercise group was walk at the treadmil and the resistance exercise group used a machine. Both group carried out three times a week for 16 weeks. In this study used two-way ANOVA repeated measures. Post-hoc was Scheffé test and significant level was set to 0.5. According to the result of this study, In Senior Fitness Test, 30-second chiar stand test showed significant increase in the aerobic group (p<.001). 30-second arm curl test, in aerobic exercise group (p<.01) and the resistance exercise group (p<0.01) showed a significant increase. 2.44 m timed up and go tests show significant increases in aerobic and resistance exercise groups (p<.05-p<.01). two-minute step test showed a significant increase in aerobic exercise groups (p<.05). In self-efficacy, the interaction effects (p<.05) were shown, and in the post-hoc results, the resistance exercise group was higher than the control group. In Self-efficacy has only had a positive effect on the resistance group. Therefore, aerobic exercise also has an effect on SFT, but it is recommended that resistance exercise be encouraged for female women to improve their SFT and self-efficacy.
