The first examples of triarylboron-functionalized 8-hydroxyquinoline ligands and their aluminium complexes have been synthesized. These luminescent derivatives of the well-known electron transport material tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminium (Alq(3)) display enhanced electron-accepting ability relative to Alq(3), and can also be used as an indicator for small F(-) and CN(-) anions.
