Effect of Ligustrazine on MDA,SOD and T-AOC in Erythrocyte Membrane in Patients with Hemoglobin H Disease

Objective To explore the effect of ligustrazine in treatment of patients with hemoglobin H disease and its possible mechaniam by investigation of the change in levels of hemoglobin(Hb),malondialdehyde(MDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD) and total anti-oxidation capacity(T-AOC) in erythrocyte membrane of patients with HbH disease before and after treatment with ligustrazine.Method Twenty five patients confirmed as HbH disease in this hospital from January 2005 to December 2008 were treated with ligustrazine for 6 months.The levels of MDA,SOD and T-AOC in erythrocyte membrane and hemoglobin concentration were detected before treatment with ligustrazine and 1,3 and 6 months after treatment.Paired T-test was applied for statistical analysis and the difference was significant(P0.05).Results There was remarkably higher level of Hb,SOD activity and T-AOC in erythrocyte membrane after ligustrazine treatment besides a lower MDA content.The difference was significant for patients before ligustrazine treatment compared with those after ligustrazine treatment(P0.05),but there was no significant difference found in Hb concentration,MDA,SOD and T-AOC compared among 1st,3 rd and 6 th month after ligustrazine treatment(P0.05).Conclusion Ligustrazine can decrease the severity of anemia in patients with HbH disease,one mechanism of which may be related to its ability to affect the oxidative and antioxidative system in the body of patients.
