Abstract Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are widely used to mitigate undesirable structural vibrations that result from intensive uncertain environmental phenomena. This paper deals with the optimum tuning of the free parameters of passive and active TMDs. Novel Chaotic Optimization Algorithm (COA) is used to determine the optimal parameters for the TMD systems. This algorithm has been tested on a 10‐story shear-type frame under strong seismic motions, as well as response control of wind-excited of a 76-story concrete office tower. The numerical results reveal that the tuned mass dampers with optimum parameters have good capability in attenuating the responses of the structural system under different excitations.
