Pool Boiling

In pool boiling, any movement of liquid is by natural convection. It is therefore also known as natural convection boiling. In nucleate boiling, bubbles form at the heated surface and depart into the liquid. In transition boiling, heating surface is in intermittent contact with liquid. In this chapter, all discussions are for pure non metallic fluids except where stated otherwise. Heat transfer coefficient initially rises with increasing heat flux but eventually it falls steeply with further increase in heat flux. This phenomenon is known by names such as boiling crisis, nucleate boiling, critical heat flux (CHF), and dryout. No well-verified method is available for predicting transition boiling heat transfer. Linear interpolation between CHF and minimum film boiling appears to be the best approach. In film boiling, the heater surface is completely covered by a vapor layer that is surrounded by liquid.
