VISSIM traffic micro-simulation model on Gilingan Viaduct and Gilingan underpass Surakarta

Gilingan Viaduct is one point of traffic congestion in Surakarta due to the high traffic volume that exceeds its capacity. Apart from that, there is an issue about the impossibility of large vehicles in passing through Gilingan Viaduct hence large vehicles must be diverted to other roads. These issues lead to the congestion of related roads and the declining performance of transport logistics in Surakarta. To overcome these problems, the Local Government of Surakarta proposed to build underpass, as well as traffic management and engineering in the area around Gilingan Viaduct. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of Gilingan Viaduct and Gilingan Underpass infrastructure. Analyses were performed by using VISSIM traffic micro-simulation to build a micro-simulation network model. The Gilingan Viaduct model is built based on a field survey data, which is then calibrated and validated to adjust it with the conditions on the field. Based on the calibrated and validated Gilingan model, Underpass Gilingan model is made in accordance with the detail engineering design. The performance of Gilingan Viaduct model is compared to Gilingan Underpass model on peak hour. The analysis shows that the performance of Gilingan Underpass model is better than Gilingan Viaduct model in terms of performance measure at intersections and network performance evaluation parameters.
