Vibroseis as a source of energy has become a staple for seismic exploration due to lowering operational costs and improving data quality. The results of recent innovations have enabled broadband data with starting frequencies as low as 1.5 Hz and as high as 250 Hz with current technology. However the way that vibroseis specifications are bid on most projects has gone nearly unchanged since the initial introduction of the technology in the 1950's. Significant advances in hydraulic vibroseis technology have not been well articulated or perhaps appreciated in our industry, restricting the understanding of the many technical changes, operational benefits and quality improvements which have advanced vibroseis technology over the past 15 years. The consequence is that advanced technology can get ignored and the opportunity for better results is missed. This paper will discuss how modifications to vibroseis specifications can increase the understanding of these technical advances and ultimately improve results realized on future projects.
