A French community-based intervention for parents of French-Canadian children with behavior problems: The EQUIPE program

Behavior problems are one of the most common reasons for seeking mental health services in pediatric populations. The objectives are to evaluate the effects of the EQUIPE program (Étude Québécoise d’Intervention pour les Parents d’Enfants avec des problèmes de comportement) and to analyze the impact of the severity of behavior problems and of parental characteristics. This program was translated from the Community Parent Education Program. The effects of EQUIPE, as compared to a control group, were evaluated by using Child Behavior Checklist and Parent Stress Index questionnaires before (T0) and after the intervention program (T1), and at 6 (T2) and 12 months (T3) follow-up visits. In total, 533 participants were enrolled in intervention (n = 465) (with “severe” or “mild” subgroups according to CBCL-T score) and a control group (n = 68). In the two groups, the results showed a statistically significant decrease in Child Behavior Checklist and Parent Stress Index total scores at T1, T2 and T3, with the exception of Child Behavior Checklist total scores in the control group at T2. In the intervention group Child Behavior Checklist total scores were significantly higher in the “severe”; which was not the case for Parent Stress Index total scores at T2 and T3. Socioeconomic characteristics, family details, parental medical history and the age of the children appeared to influence changes in Child Behavior Checklist and Parent Stress Index total scores. The EQUIPE program is an effective intervention for reducing behavior problems and parents’ stress in a French-Canadian population. Les troubles du comportement sont l’un des motifs principaux de consultation dans les services de santé mentale en population pédiatrique. Les objectifs de cette étude sont d’évaluer les effets du programme d’intervention EQUIPE et d’analyser l’impact de la sévérité du problème de comportement et les caractéristiques parentales. Ce programme est traduit à partir du programme « Community Parent Education Program ». Les effets du programme EQUIPE, par rapport à un groupe témoin, sont évalués à l’aide des questionnaires Child Behavior Checklist et Parent Stress Index avant (T0), après le programme d’intervention (T1), à 6 (T2) et à 12 mois (T3) de suivi. Les résultats sont basés sur l’auto-évaluation des parents. Au total, 533 participants ont été inclus avec n = 465 dans le groupe d’intervention (avec des sous-groupes « sévère » ou « léger » selon le score total à la Child Behavior Checklist) et n = 68 dans le groupe témoin. Dans les deux groupes, les résultats ont montré une diminution statistiquement significative des scores totaux à la Child Behavior Checklist et à la Parent Stress Index à T1, T2 et T3, à l’exception des scores totaux à la Child Behavior Checklist dans le groupe témoin à T2. Dans le groupe d’intervention, les scores totaux à la Child Behavior Checklist sont significativement plus élevés dans le groupe « sévère » ; ce qui n’était pas le cas pour les scores à la Parent Stress Index à T2 et T3. Les caractéristiques socioéconomiques, les antécédents médicaux des parents et l’âge des enfants influencent les changements des scores des questionnaires Child Behavior Checklist et Parent Stress Index. Le programme EQUIPE est une intervention efficace pour réduire les troubles du comportement et le stress des parents dans une population canadienne-française.
