1. 18 cases of Cushing's syndrome associated with verified pituitary tumours, and one new case are presented. 2. Of the 19 patients, 4 had metastasising pituitary carcinomas, 5 had invasive chromophobe adenomas, 2 mixed and 7 chromophobe adenomas. 3. The nature of the cutaneous pigmentation frequently seen in this condition is discussed. 4. A classification of pituitary adenomas into (i) spontaneous and (ii) reactive types is proposed. 5. The relationship between pituitary tumours and Cushing's syndrome is discussed.
