This article discusses the advantages of using neoprene bearing pads in bridge construction and gives a few technical specifications as to the logic behind pad size and shape in relation to the type of load it will be supporting. Two types of these pads are used for bridge applications; the first uses extruded neoprene to form the entire bearing, while the second consists of alternating layers of neoprene and steel that are vulcanized together. Neoprene pads are useful as they allow for lateral movement in addition to compression- with variances in these allowances depending on the size, shape, and thickness of the bearing. The article also contrasts neoprene bearings to conventional mechanical bearings. The fabrication of these bearings is also simpler than that of mechanical bearings, which allows for cost savings.
