Abstract This article discusses methods for constructing confidence intervals. The basic principles underlying interval estimation are discussed, followed by simple examples of exact confidence intervals based on normality assumptions. Maximum likelihood‐based approximate confidence interval methods are then described, including interval estimation methods based on the use of likelihood ratio tests.
