A strategy to supply the population with envelopes
containing salts for oral rehydration is described. The
mortality rate due to diarrhea in beneficiaries of the
Mexican Institute for Social Security in the state of
Jalisco during the years 1984·1986 is analyzed. The
observed decrease in deaths due to diarrhea in the
less than one year agegroup is considered ro be cIosely
related to the use of oral rehydration therapy.
