Structural and dynamic studies of adsorbates on metal surfaces using second harmonic generation (A)

Due to the breaking of inversion symmetry at the surface of a single crystal, second harmonic generation (SHG) becomes possible in dipole approximation. The measurement of SHG at the interfacial region thus provides a high degree of surface sensitivity as was recently demonstrated on surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum conditions.1–3
