It is considered for a long time that damping hasn't obvious effect on structure's maximum response when the structure is suffered with a short time shock.So a shock isolation system is often designed only considering its stiffness.Using damping or semi-active damping in a shock isolation system is becoming a study hotspot after appearance of MR/ER dampers.But,studies mainly are concentrated into applications with a long time shock or cases in which only the maximum relative displacements are cared under earthquake.But,there are few studies on cases with a short time shock or with strict demands on both shock isolation efficiency and relative displacement amplitude in equipments of warship.The effect of viscous damping in a soft stiffness shock isolation system was studied here.It was indicated that using damping can improve the shock isolation performance,but with enhancing the soft characteristic of the stiffness,the improved effect of damping on shock isolation performance drops.
