Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coatings are promising coatings for corrosion protection in waste heat recovery. However, they are permeable to acidic corrosive media, and the mechanistic investigations on corrosion protection properties of PTFE coatings in H2SO4 solutions are still scarce. Herein, the acid permeability related corrosion protection properties of PTFE coatings for waste heat recovery were studied. Results reveal that PTFE coatings in 30 wt% H2SO4 solutions have the worst corrosion protection properties, which is related to the shortest H bonds for H3O+ shuttled in these solutions. It provides theoretical guidance for the structural design of PTFE coatings for corrosion protection.
