Nanofiltration membranes play an important role in the advanced water treatment as well as membrane mediated waste water reclamation and other industrial separations. Therefore, the factors of NF separation and membrane fouling in high-pressure membrane systems were important. Recent studies shown that membrane surface morphology and structure as well as surface chemical characteristics influence permeability, rejection, and fouling behavior of nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this paper, a comprehensive literature review are reported, targeting the physical-chemical characteristics of NF membrane affecting separation and fouling, including pore size, porosity, surface morphology (measured as roughness), surface charge (measured as zeta potential), and hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity (measured as contact angle), et al. Correspondingly, feed water composition such as pH, ionic strength and the presence of organic matter, the hydrodynamics and the operating conditions such as pressure, concentration polarization, and membrane foulants are also discussed as having an influence on membrane physical-chemical properties.
