Both PS/OMMT composites and PS/MMT composites are prepared by emulsion polymerization.The cone calorimeter is used to measure the flammability of PS/OMMT composites and PS/MMT composites.The results show that the heat release rates,the mass loss rates and the smoke production rates are all reduced dramatically.The possible mechanism of flame retardancy is discussed based on analysis of the flammability and combustion residues.The effects of composites on the conversion rates of the polymerization are observed.The study shows that the composites are an efficient and environmental friendly flame retarded system for PS.
