Secondary Data Analysis: Effects of Behavioral Modification Program and Foot Reflexology Integrated with Medication Use on Blood Sugar, Hemoglobin A1C and Numbness in Persons with Type 2 Diabetes MellitusThis research aimed to study the effects of a behavioral modification program and foot reflexology integrated with medication use on blood sugar, hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) and numbness in persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study of the project “Changing Risk Behaviour in Metabolic Syndrome Group by Diet Control, Exercise and Foot Reflexology” of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ladaval Ounprasertpong Nicharojana et al. In this study, the researcher used partially analyzed secondary data . This study is a quasi-experimental research with a two group pretest-posttest control group design.Selected samples of the qualifying criteria 15 samples in the experimental group, which has been in the program for five sessions at two-week intervals and daily foot reflexology over a period of twelve weeks was integrated with regular medication use. A control group of 15 samples received routine nursing care and medication use only. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Fisher's Exact Test, Paired t-test, Independent t- test, Wilcoxon signed-ranks test and Mann Whitney-U test. The study result found blood sugar level, HbA1C and numbness of the experimental group at week 12 less than the pre-test levels with statistical significance (p<.001, p<.01 and p<.01 respectively). The blood sugar level, HbA1C and numbness at wk 12th of the experimental group were less than those in the control group with statistical significance (p<.01, p<.01 and p<.001 respectively). The mean of blood sugar level of the experimental group at wk 16th which nursing personnel did not coach, found the blood sugar level was not different from wk 12th, indicating that the effects of behavioral modification program and foot reflexology integrated with medication use to provide the persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus can control blood sugar level to remain good. However it should have regular activities in order to stimulating and should be monitored in the long term. This study indicates that the behavioral modification program and foot reflexology integrated with medication use can reduce blood sugar level, HbA1C and numbness in persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study is a kind of integrated medicine for using foot reflexology complement with medication use and behavioral modification to fulfill holistic care. The aim was reduce to the incidence of long term complications and lead to good quality of life for persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
