The electrolyte affects the effective viscosity in the following simplified fashion. When the electrolyte is initially added to the slip, it is diluted by the free water in it, and the electrolyte is cooled to the temperature of the slip. On cooling, the electrolyte components enter the slip structure and alter the charges in the double electrical layer. The viscosity increases because the clay particles in the slip lose their previous mobility.
