Objective To study the effects of Edaravone on levels of reactive oxygen radicals and water content of cerebral tissue in intracerebral hemorrhage rats. Methods Intracerebral hemorrhage models of rat were made by injecting autologous blood using stereotaxic method. In Edaravone group, rats were treated with Edaravone i.p.before and after intracerebral hemorrhage. The rats of intracerebral hemorrhage group were not treated.Malonaldehyde(MDA) content of cerebral tissue was assaied by thio-barbituric acid method;the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) was detected by xanthine oxidation.Brain water content was measured by dry-wet method. Results In intracerebral hemorrhage group,MDA content was significantly higher(P0.01),SOD activity was significantly lower(P0.01) and brain water content increased clearly(P0.05~0.01),compared with control group.Compare with intracerebral hemorrhage group, the MDA contents were much lower(P0.05~0.01),the SOD activities were much higher(P0.05~0.01)and brain water contents were lower(all P0.05)at 1 d,3 d,7 d after intracerebral hemorrhage in Edaravone group. Conclusion Edaravone has brain protective effects on intracerebral hemorrhage rats by scavenging MDA,increasing the SOD activity and inhibiting brain edema.
