Cement-mortar linings are used in steel water pipes in thicknesses from 1/4-in. thickness to 1/2-in. thickness in accordance with AWWA Standard C205, Cement-Mortar Protective Lining and Coating for Steel Water Pipe—4 in. (100 mm) and Larger—Shop Applied and AWWA Standard C602, Cement-Mortar Lining of Water Pipelines in Place—4 in. (100 mm) and Larger. Cracks in the lining can occur from temperature, shrinkage, and handling. AWWA C205 and C602 list requirements for repair of such cracks, including the use of autogenous healing. AWWA C604, Installation of Buried Steel Water Pipe—4 in. (100 mm) and Larger, also addresses the use of autogenous healing for the repair of cracks. This paper will describe autogenous healing, using it to repair cracks and review case histories of use.
