Employs numerical model scattering simulations to estimate the size thresholds for a number of hydrometeor types at which non-Rayleigh conditions become a serious problem for the dual-wavelength radar differential attenuation technique. These theoretical thresholds help define the range of applicability of the dual-wavelength radar method. The authors also examine a method for skipping across non-Rayleigh regions of cloud to provide estimates of the liquid water content in those regions which have reduced range resolution but improved accuracy. Data from the initial Winter Icing and Storms Project (WISP) field tests are used in these new evaluations.
