The Flory interaction parameter χ1 of polyvinyl alcohol-water systems has been estimated from the diffusion data, the polyvinyl alcohol having been crosslinked from terephthalaldehyde. The values of χ1 are reported for the polymer volume fraction between 0·130 and 0·326. The values of χ1 for the terephthalaldehyde-crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol-water system increased with increase in the volume fraction of polyvinyl alcohol in this study. This method was applied to glutaraldehyde and heat-treatment crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol and was found to apply to those systems. The estimated data were successfully tested by a comparison with experimental data that were available in the literature.
