Objective To study the special characteristics of kidney transplantation in the polycystic kidney patients and to explore the feasibility of renal transplantation without removing original kidney and to investigate its influence on the graft. Methods The clinical results of 28 cases of polycystic kidney receiving kidney transplantation were analyzed. The oldest was 62 years with the average age being 56.2years and the dialysis lasted 3-18 months. The original kidneys were not removed before, during or after transplantation. After operation.the size and haematuria of the graft were observed.Anti-infection treatment was carried out. Results One-year and 3-year patient/graft kidney survival rate was 95.2% and 85.7% respectively. The longest survival was 9 years. The acute rejection incidence was 10.7%.After transplantation, the original kidneys become smaller and smaller and haematuria gradually disappeared. Conclusions In the polycystic kidney patients receiving kidney transplantation, the features of polycystic kidney was not the dominant factors to affect the transplantation effects and to cause the complications in the posttransplantation. The satisfactory clinical results could be obtained without removing the original polycystic kidney. After transplantation, carefully monitoring haematuria, infection and implementing the effective measures, the manifestations of the polycystic kidneys would be alleviated or disappear, the size of polycystic kidneys would obviously become small.
