ABSTRACT As an important subtype of GABAergic interneurons, parvalbumin ( PV ) interneurons play a critical role in regulating cortical circuits and neural networks. Abnormalities in the development or function of PV interneurons have been linked to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social and language deficits. In this review, we focus on the abnormalities of PV interneurons in ASD , including quantity and function and discuss the underlying mechanisms of impairments in PV interneurons in the pathology of ASD . Finally, we propose potential therapeutic approaches targeting PV interneurons, such as transplanting MGE progenitor cells and utilizing optogenetic stimulation in the treatment of ASD.
