The Isolation and Identification of the Chemical Constituents of the Root of Echinacea Augustifolia, Dc

A procedure has been developed for the isolation and separation of the several chemical classes of the constituents in the root of the Echinacea angustlfolia, DC. This procedure separates the ethanol soluble components into different classes of organic compounds. After the separation of the component classes of compounds a preliminary study of the chemical properties of the naturally occurring substances was made. Through these characteristics one compound has been positively identified and several other compounds tentatively identified. By use of this method of separation any ethanol soluble class of organic compounds occurring in the root may be obtained for further study without difficulty.
