摘要

Abstract Natural hydrogen (NH) is a promising energy source with potential benefits for decarbonization, energy security, and long-term sustainability. This paper evaluates NH exploration in Germany and compares its progress with European and non-European countries. It identifies challenges, opportunities, and approaches to NH development across different regions. The study uses geological assessments, government reports, and case studies from Germany, France, UK, Netherlands, Canada, USA, and Australia. Key focus areas include geological potential, exploration techniques, policy frameworks, regulations, and NH integration into national energy systems. Germany has conducted early pilot studies in Northern Bavaria and the Upper Rhine Graben, showing signs of NH presence. However, national efforts remain limited due to high costs, infrastructure gaps, and regulatory uncertainty. The paper analyzes pilot projects and compares technological, economic, and infrastructure outcomes across regions. France has advanced NH development, integrating commercial-scale projects into its national strategy. The UK supports NH research but faces deployment barriers. The Netherlands focuses on hydrogen storage, not extraction, and leads in infrastructure. Canada and the USA are ahead in NH development, supported by geological mapping and active drilling. Australia is exploring NH, though commercialization is still early. Japan and South Korea prioritize synthetic hydrogen due to limited geological potential. These international efforts show Natural hydrogen (NH) viability under favorable geological and policy conditions. Countries with integrated strategies and public-private partnerships progress faster in NH development. Germany has made initial strides but lags behind global leaders like France, Canada, and the USA. This paper offers a comparative analysis of NH development and highlights Germany's untapped potential. Findings show NH could support Germany's energy transition if supported by reforms and investment. To accelerate progress, Germany must address regulatory gaps and adopt global best practices. Cross-border collaboration and innovation could enhance NH development and benefit all regions involved. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations for Germany's role in the emerging NH economy.
