8% (in mole) yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) thick films for solid oxide fuel cells were fabricated by an aqueous tape casting method using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), latex (B1070) and PVA+B1070 as binders, respectively. The effects of binder type on the tape casting processing and green density of 8YSZ tapes were investigated. The results show that the degree of shear thinning and viscosity of the slurries increase with the increase of PVA content, but decrease with the increase of B1070 content, respectively. The binder type also has a significant influence on the green density and drying shrinkage of 8YSZ tapes. The final-sintered density of 8YSZ films increases with the increase of green density. The film fabricated with 30% (in mass) PVA+70% B1070 as compound binder and a mass ratio of 8YSZ to the compound binder has the highest green density. The relative density of the 8YSZ film sintered at 1 400 ℃ for 2 h reaches 98.5%
