Analysis of blood pressure and metabolic parameter in 556 medical university students

Objective To investigate the prevalence of hypertension in medical university students and its possible relative factors. Methods Rest and post exercise blood pressure were measured in 556 medical university students and their body height,body mass,body mass index(BMI),waist circumference,hip circumference and waist-hip ratio(WHR) were measured,too. Results Five students out of all 556 students( 0.89%) had positive history of hypertension,the new onset hypertension accounted for 1.62%(9/556),the total prevalence of hypertension was 2.52%(14/556).Systolic and diastolic pressure were positively correlated with body height and waist circumference(P 0.001).The BMI,WHR of the students with hypertension were higher than those with normal blood pressure(P 0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of hypertension was 2.52% in medical university students.BMI and WHR as two metabolic parameters were possibly correlated with hypertension.
