Association between HLA-B*1502 allele and carbamazepine-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis in Hanzu people in Jiangxi province

Objective:To determine whether HLA-B~*1502 allele is associated with carbamazepine-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis in Hanzu people in Jiangxi province.Methods:HLA-B~*1502 allele genotyping was performed by a polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primers(PCR-SSP) method in 19 Han subjects who had carbamazepine-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis,90 carbamazepine tolerant controls,and 80 healthy individuals.Results:The frequency of HLA-B*1502 allele in SJS/TEN patients was significantly higher than that in carbamazepine-tolerant controls(100%vs.15.5%,P0.001) and normal individuals(100%vs.18.75%,P0.001).But the frequency in carbamazepine-tolerant controls did not differ significantly from that in healthy controls(P=0.684).Conclusions:There is a strong association between HLA-B*1502 allele and carbamazepine-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome,and toxic epidermal necrolysis in Hanzu people in Jiangxi province.
