A review of the status and prospects of alkaline electrolysis is provided. The contents of this overview are first a brief historical survey, the chemical principles of alkaline electrolysis, operational principles, technical concepts, materials, and degradation effects. Furthermore, anion exchange membrane electrolysis is discussed in detail followed by a description of technical plants. In the end, the prospect and further developments of alkaline electrolysis are given.
