A New Synthetic Technique of Anisole

Using dimethyl carbonate (DMC) as a substitute for dimethyl sulfate, phenol was methylated over NaX zeolites in the vapor phase. Anisole was obtained by this new technique. Under the optimum reaction conditions: n(phenol)∶n(DMC)=1 0∶1 0, 280℃, contact time 6s, the yield of anisole reached 84 3%.
