To understand the effect of wind on buildings, bridges, and other structures, one needs to understand the characteristics of wind. When the wind interacts with structures depending on the structural property of the structure, different wind phenomenon happens. This chapter provides some introduction to wind engineering. The wind velocity changes from zero to a maximum at a certain height from the ground. The maximum velocity reaches at different height depending on the ground roughness. Even within the straight-line boundary layer-type wind, when the wind interacts with structures and surroundings, several phenomena happen. The fluid–structure interaction is also called aerodynamic effect. The ASCE 7-10 provides methods to calculate the wind load for main wind force resisting systems (MWFRSs) and components and cladding. The MWFRS loads are overall loads on the structure.
