Alkaline hydrolysis of leather shavings with NaOH, MgO, CaO and Na2CO3 respectively were studied from the hydrolysis rate and nitrogen content under the same amount of alkali. The hydrolysis conditions for leather shaving with sodium hydroxide were optimized by orthogonal test.And the optimum conditions were obtained as follows:the dosage of sodium hydroxide was 7%,hydrolytic temperature was 120 ℃, hydrolytic time was 6 h, and the solid-to-liquid ratio was 1∶9.
