Abstract This paper examines findings from research projects in Australia and internationally to explore the importance of including fictional picture books sharing Australian First Nations' culture in school library collections. Research and comparative student assessments indicate low literacy rates (Hillman, 2023) and stifled intercultural understanding continue to impact Australian society. Addressing these concerns through concerted efforts to diversify school library collections and explicit teaching across learning areas using fictional picture books is assisted by teacher librarians (TLs) whose curriculum and library collection knowledge (ALIA, 2022) helps foster 21st century skills such as critical thinking, communication and social responsibility in students (Department of Education, 2022). |
