By Roberson, Emily Brin Source University of California, Berkeley Published 1991 Indexed 2023-05-23 Document Type Dissertation/Thesis Abstract Environmental control of the production of microbial extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) was investigated in pure cultures of a soil Pseudomonas species and in an agricultural soil. Nitrogen limitation stimulated EPS production per unit microbial biomass in liquid culture, in unsaturated sand cultures (matric potential = $-0.05$ MPa), and in soil. Increased allocation of carbon to EPS synthesis appears to be a basic soil microbial response to N limitation, suggesting that EPS production may help microorganisms survive limitations of N or other nutrients. Desiccation stimulated EPS production and depressed protein production while wetting decreased EPS and increased protein contents in sand cultures of the Pseudomonas. Carbon allocation, therefore, shifted from protein production after wetting to EPS production during desiccation. |
