This paper gives a review of the development of the coolant and lubricant systems, starting from the classic ones, which are used in the machining, and then it deals with both the dry processing and the alternative methods of cooling during the machining. The influence of coolants and lubricants on the environment and the people's health is emphasized as well as the implementation of cooling with cold compressed air. Cold compressed air can replace the function of classic coolants and lubricants during the cooling of both tool and machining parts, and also on the cooling of the chips and their elimination from the machining area. The vortex tube is mostly used in cold compressed air cooling, which enables the separation of hot and cold air during the flow of compressed air across the incoming nozzles tangentially into the vortex chamber.
