Preparation of gamma-nickel oxyhydroxide through high temperature reaction of nickel with anhydrous sodium hydroxide

Gamma-nickel oxyhydroxide (γ-NiOOH) was prepared from the reaction of nickel with NaOH at ~850 °C. The reaction products were separated by leaching with water after the system was cooled. The product, characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, infrared and thermogravimetric methods, was found to be γ-NiOOH.
