[Metformin. Mode of action and effect of monotherapy and combination therapy on glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetes].

The aim of the review is to give a short presentation of the pharmacological properties and effectiveness of metformin. Existing evidence for the clinical use of metformin, both in monotherapy and in combination with other classes of anti-diabetics, is discussed. Overall, metformin presents a very favourable profile in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
