Efficacy and crop safety of several cotton herbicides

Field experiments indicated good efficacy of the eight soil-applied herbicides, trifluralin, alachlor, acetochlor,metolachlor, pendimethalin, prometryne, oxadiazon, and butralin, in controlling both grass and broadleaf weeds. Theseherbicides provided a longer duration of control than did postemergence herbicides. The four postemergence herbicides,sethoxydim, fluazifop-P, quizalofop-P, and haloxyfop-P, provided good control of grass weeds but had no efficacyagainst broadleaf weeds. Greenhouse crop safety experiments indicated that alachlor, acetochlor, and metolachlorsignificantly injured cotton, pendimethalin reduced cotton plant height but had no effect on fresh weights, and theother herbicides did not injure cotton.
