VCSEL Fundamentals

This chapter describes the fundamental device principles of VCSELs including the base building blocks and material choices for the distributed Bragg reflector and the quantum well active region, as well as how these components can be placed to form various VCSEL structures. Operating characteristics are also described including the V-I and L-I characteristics, optical modes, beam divergence, modulation performance, and how these behaviors vary with temperature.
