Polymethyl methacrylate is among the most commonly used materials for the fabrication of removable complete or partial dentures. It is the main component of the denture base material and has easy handling and favorable esthetics. However, poor mechanical properties are among the main shortcomings of acrylic resins, making them susceptible to fracture. Attempts have been made to enhance the mechanical properties of acrylic resins by the incorporation of copolymers and cross linking agents Nanotechnology has made a significant advancements in dentistry, especially in prosthodontics. Nanoparticle are being widely used in dental materials to improve their mechanical, physical and biological properties The addition of nanoparticles to polymethyl methacrylate enhances its impact strength through several mechanism. Nanoparticles act as obstacle in the polymer matrix , forcing cracks to deflect rather than propagating directly, which helps dissipate energy and prevent failure. They also contribute to toughening mechanism like crack bridging and plastic deformation allowing PMMA absorb more impact energy. Nanoparticles create synergistic effect, significantly boosting PMMA’s toughness and durability, making it more resilient for various applications, including prosthodontics. Addition of zirconia, titanium, silicon and aluminium nanoparticle improve impact strength. To compare and evaluate the impact strength of conventional polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and PMMA reinforced with silanized nanoparticles of zirconia dioxide, titanium dioxide, aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide at different (1,3,5 by wt%) concentration.
