A new single step process for synthesizingα-terpineol from turpentine oil was studied.According to the requirement of the hydration of turpentine oil,an orthogonal test with four factors including the molar ratio of chloroacetic acid to turpentine oil,the molar ratio of water to turpentine oil,the reaction temperature and the amount of auxiliary catalyst chromium trioxide, was made to obtain the optimum reaction condition. The optimum hydration condition listed as:reaction temperature was 65℃, the molar ratio of chloroacetic acid to turpentine oil was 2:1,the molar ratio of water to turpentine oil was 4:1,the mass ratio of chromium trioxide was 0.5%(based on turpentine oil). The conversion rate of turpentine oil was up to 85%and selectivity of a-terpineol reached 60%.
