THE 40 COUNTING POINTS INSTALLED ON FEDERAL ROADS IN AUSTRIA PROVIDE INFORMATION WHICH CAN BE USED IN ACCIDENT ANALYSIS. THE AUTHOR REPORTS ON THE DETERMINATION OF TRAFFIC FLOWS, NUMBERS OF VEHICLES INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS AND NON-LINEAR REGRESSIONS FOR THE DEFINITION OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN ACCIDENT RISK AND TRAFFIC VOLUME. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDIES SHOW THAT ACCIDENT CONDITIONS CAN BE DIVIDED INTO FOUR GROUPS ACCORDING TO THE RELATION TO TRAFFIC VOLUME; SOME ACCIDENT CONDITIONS INCREASE WITH INCREASING TRAFFIC VOLUME AND OTHERS DECREASE WITH HIGHER TRAFFIC VOLUME. THE INVESTIGATIONS BEGUN ARE TO BE CONTINUED WITH STUDIES OF FINER POINTS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODEL REPRESENTATIONS FOR THE PRACTICAL CLARIFICATION AND DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCIDENT PROCESS.
