OBJECTIVE:To optimize the processing technique of Radix Polygoni Multiflori and to draw a comparison with the traditional processing technique.METHODS:The processing technique of Radix Polygoni Multiflori was optimized by or-thogonal design with water extract, diphenyl ethylene glycoside and water-soluble saccharides as indexes. The high-pressure processed products were compared with the traditional one in parameters,HPLC fingerprints, and the percentages of saccharides of different molecular weights.RESULTS:The influential factors in high-pressure processing of radix polygoni multiflori were ranked in order as the following:steaming-temperatureheating-timedry-time.The high-pressure processing and the traditional one were different in thermodynamics and the processed products by the two methods were also different either in alcohol-soluble extractives or in molecular weight of polysaccharide.CONCLUSION:Further pharmacodynamic studies are needed to confirm whether it is possible for pressure-steaming processing to replace the traditional steaming processing.
